The Run
Humper’s Score – 82/91
The last time Humper came to a Lakeside Run it was winter and he was running in the dark. Due to daylight savings he thought “Great, I’ll be running in the light this time,” but the run was so long that we returned well after dark and well after dinner was served. The run took us through the streets of Kew with some well placed checks and on backs, under the freeway and onto a shared track alongside Kew Golf Club.
A cycling club were racing through and most forgot their bells, leading to some cross words about hogging the track. Some dirt tracks through the Burke Road wetlands led to the drink stop, which was overrun by Cooch, Two Bottoms and Prince because the hare had not yet arrived. When they realised they were on their own, they returned to find the rest of the pack and the walkers enjoying the hares beer and softies.
At this point the hare told everyone we had covered about two thirds of the run. Not sure if he got his subtraction right or if he realised that no-one would have continued if they knew it was only one third. The run continued east through the Freeway golf course and around the soccer grounds to Bulleen Road opposite the Manningham Club (venue for his run last year). By now the pack had split considerably, and there were several small packs running back along the pathways on the South side of the Eastern Freeway.
The trail led to Hays Paddock and then to Kilby Road, where the mid pack caught up with the FRB’s, before winding through the streets of Kew again back home. After about an hour and forty minutes and 13km later, the early runners returned to find dinner on the table and the hare and walkers tucking in. The remaining runners arrived about 10 minutes later.
The Walk
Swamp Rat’s Score – 91/91
The walk went to the tunnel with the Runners, so I raced ahead of Pointy only to find the check, so I checked the wrong way and got left far behind the Runners. I followed the Pack past the tunnel as far as the Drink Stop, then wisely followed the Walkers home.
Charges from the Floor
- Prince- Standing in the middle of the bike trail, so being abused by a cyclist who had not rung his bell.
- 2 Bottoms – Totally ineffectual in controlling the Hare before the Run.
- Cooch – Hasn’t learned not to run up hills yet.
- Mother Brown – Last run, heading home for the winter.
- Lubang Oz, Nickel B, Lotsafun – Heroically finished the Run.
- Lotsafun – Her dinner was sitting on the table without her.
- Big Ears – Misplanned the timing of the Drink Stop and when the dinner was served, since all the Runners ate cold food.
- 2 Bottoms & Cooch – Run too quickly.
- Peanuts – The Walkers’ Rep, completing 7.2 km.
- Lotsafun – Ran past a dozen golf balls and did not pick any up, whereas on a previous Run was observed picking up several golf balls that were still in play.
- Prince – Encouraging the Pack to cross over the golf course greens.
- Humper – Running across the golf course.
- Point Post – Leaving the Run trail to finish with the Walkers.
- Klingon – Drag On used the bunker but did not rake the sand afterwards.
