Run 1229, 17 October 2007 Hare: NickleB & LotsaFun Venue: Riversdale Hotel, cnr Auburn & Riversdale Roads, Hawthorn
Eleven runners/walkers gathered on the pavement outside the pub to hear a convoluted and garbled explanation from NickelB as to what constituted a hash arrow going forward, a hash arrow going backward, a walkers arrow going in the direction of the runners arrow and a completely separate runners arrow following an on back. Confusing? No not really said NickelB. Just follow the arrows. Couch asked for more information and even bent forward to listen more intently. ‘Adam’ the runner who brews his own beer and we hadn’t seen for a while charged off into the night and we followed, all 4 of us. The run was well marked with lots of on backs that had us studying the map to keep us on track – that is when Lots of Fun wasn’t holding it up side down and sending us off in the opposite direction. Cooch and Adam set a cracking pace, followed by Kokup and Lots of Fun and myself as we wound our way around the the back lanes and parkways of Hawthorn, overcoming some challenging onbacks and devious trail setting and hash calling at the tops of our voices to keep our little group together. So it was but an hour later when we arrived at the drink stop – all 5 of us- to be told the walkers had past through ages ago. They were back at the pub eating their cheap steaks. Where were you? What kept you? NickelB wanted to know everything. Did I really set such a long run? Kokup wouldn’t shut up about the onbacks. Yes he said, a 2 km run with 5km of onbacks. We laughed. NickelB doled out the dregs of some red potion laced with bubbly wine and gin in paper cups. We laughed again. That red stuff had gone straight to our heads. Wow! Then it was back to the pub and our cheap steaks were waiting.
