Lakeside Hash House Harriers The drinking club with a running problem
Run 1029, 10 March 2004, 20th Anniversary Run Hare: Committee Venue: Albert Park Lake BBQs
There was movement at the Lake, for the word had past around That the first mixed hash in Melbourne had come of age, And had joined the veitenas the event was worth a thousand beers, So all the hacks had gathered to the fray.
All the tried and noted runners from the suburbs near and far Had mustered at the picnic ground overnight, For the runners love hard running between the chicanes and straights of the Grand Prix track And their (old) sneakers snuff the battle with delight.
There was GG, who earned his stripes through years of dedication to the Club, The old man with his hair as white as snow; But few could run beside him when his blood was fairly up He would go wherever shoe and man could go.
And Barter Bitch of the Western suburbs came down to lean a hand, No better hasher ever held the reins (??????) For there is not a hash in the world where she has not run (and bought a t-shirt!) She learnt to hash while living in the States.
And one was there, a stripling, a small and weedy beast (Sorry, Whippet!); He was something like a racehorse undersized With a touch of Timor pony three parts thoroughbred at least And such as are by Dog Shows prized.
(Enough – you get the picture)
This anniversary run was a real group effort, lead by the little brown furry creature. Klingon as hare re-acted the 1st Lakeside run set by Freefall. It was fantastic to be able to do this, especially so soon after the Grand Prix (a logistical feat), but it was kind of sad that Freefall still had the original marked up map the guy has got to get a life.
The reverence of the occasions was noted early with the eskies being opened before the run. And inside there was a little surprise for the hashers, who had behaved so well for the last 20 years (????) GOOD BEER!!!!!!!! Thanks to our new friends in Richmond the beer was supplied by Mountain Goat Brewery. Now, if the hash had a dollar (instead of 65 cents as beer was sold at 1984 prices) for every time someone said Yeah, Goat Beer or Great Beer we wouldnt be fighting for sausages and bread with the D&E boys in a freezing cold shed at the next AGM.
After knocking back a couple of Pale Ales and Stouts, the runners headed off around the track. Not much was said about the run, the auspiciousness of the occasion must have got to the hashers. Big O (who should have been charged for the breaking the only universal rule in Hash smoking in the circle consider this a warning) rated the run 8 out of 10 (or was it 1 out of 10 cant read my notes) anyway no one seemed to argue with this assessment whatever it was.
After goring on hot potatoes, gourmet sausages and other bits and piece. Gerbils called the circle to order and the charges began. Big thanks need to go to Pointie for once again seeing the light.
? Sooty was charged with something, then this was changed to disappearing from the circle. ? Punch, Lotsa Fun, Shaggy and Astro got charged for having 9 in the number of runs they had completed.
(Please note at this stage, the circle got somewhat unruly in opposition to shitty beer for Down-Downs and an untrue rumour that the raffle prizes were shit. Like thats never happened before)
? GG and Sooty reached the milestones of 550 and 50 runs respectively. ? The Committee and Rolf for their combined efforts to put on this shindig. ? Tickler for something I didnt quite understand but named the hot poker at the #*^? Award. ? BB and Nickleby for (again cant read my notes) Bellies ? Punch, again, for thats what wives are for. ? GG and Udder for highest and lowest fundraisers at Lakeside good on both of them for making the effort I say, many including myself didnt. ? Janus by IBM for carting eskies for grog for miles and not using the crown lager fridge that was provided at the spot on Sunday. This should have been a rebound charge to IBM for no beer credibility as he was drinking VB when there was Goat Beer present. ? Whippet – for being best dog in show. ? GG (again) for taking philanthropy to far and giving his phone to a patron on the train. ? Cooch, IBM, E&B, Punch and Janus for something I cant remember.
It is customary to give cheers the person coming of age on their birthday, but I think in this case, the cheers should go to Gerbils, for organising a great function three cheers for the GM!!!!!!!
