Lakeside Hash House Harriers The drinking club with a running problem
Run 1031, 24 March 2004 Hare: Janus Venue: Brighton Beach Gardens, The Esplanade, Brighton
BRIGHTON ON PORT PHILIP
What a shame! The last run in daylight before the dark side comes next week. What a venue! It was a perfect evening in a perfect setting on the foreshore of Brighton Beach.; Janus did us proud!
There was however a downside namely, a rather smelly shelter, dogs that werent toilet trained and a very portly man laying claim to the shelter and the surrounding table and benches.
None of this could detract from the blue sky, balmy weather and the view. The run set off including the full compliment of the Bayside branch of Lakeside along the bike path only to be confronted with a vicious on-back to the start. Onwards along the beach which produced lots of moaning and groaning especially from Cheesecake. To really add to the misery, most of the running in the sand was part of a false trail.
Never mind, it was from thereon a run through Brightons golden mile, with its substantial mansions owned no doubt by tax evaders, drug dealers, lecherous sporting personalties, crooked jockeys, people smugglers and other pillars of society. The trail meandered from one exclusive street to another before the pack reached the railway line and onto Brighton Beach Station. It was a short run but a good one.
Calamity struck at the finish. The hare/grog master had completely underestimated the running prowess of the pack and was nowhere to be seen. The pack was at a loss what to do and thankfully, our resident astronomer in the shape of Lizard was able to amuse everyone with his tour of the evening sky (the lonely planets tour). Some of us were not convinced that he really knew his Mars from his Venus. Another distraction was provided by Rolf Harris in the form of a bottle of red wine to celebrate her 22nd birthday (or thereabouts).
Thankfully the Subaru carrying both the grog and the food arrived and people descended upon the eskies to savour the delights of Bavarian and boutique beers. In another first, the tailgate was lifted and the first soup kitchen to operate in Brighton for more than 70 years was unveiled! Proper soup kitchen food it was; with fish fingers, salad and cake.
Its goodbye to Neffratits, who is returning to Canada for the summer Hash season. All indications suggest that he will be back with another stunning creation for the Rad Dress Run
IBM took charge of the circle and a good time was had by all. Back to the dark side next week
