The Shah’s run reports are miniature masterpieces, like Haiku poetry, or a personal Zen view of life. We have come to love them and look forward to them each week. My favourite was the one which had GG being presented with a kettle in the circle.  Alas, The Shah wasn’t with us last week and you will all have to make do with your current stand-in, and a return to the days of verbose pomposity and long-winded circumlocution.

It was a grand affair at Glenferrie Oval. The Hawthorn Football Club Social Club opened up especially for Lakeside, due to Shagadelic being a member in the know.  Unfortunately she waltzed in wearing an eye-catching evening number entirely in red and black, and was promptly turfed out. Underfelt tried harder, and dressed for the occasion in a John Kennedy look-alike-gabardine overcoat. In truth, the two of them were off to the opera, and left the pack stranded on their very own hare-ing, leaving ‘Lucky’ Lucina as GM for the evening. GG was going to wear his Collingwood guernsey but he didn’t have time to colour in the stripes. We all stood around quietly, marvelling at huge murals of Dipper, Dunstall, Dermie and Co.

The run was a refreshing evening jaunt. Some complained it was too long but then we were lost most of the time. I thought it was O.K.; perhaps I’m getting fitter. And there were good arrows, big chalked ones, but only one per kilometre. A bloke watering his hedge put us back on trail down a lane by telling us that Cooch and Whippet had passed through some time ago. He also pointed out that they had been running a lot faster than we were going. We explained that that was why they were up the front. The run scored about half a perfect score.

Perhaps The Shah was really working back in the kitchen because the names on the dinner orders were incomprehensible. The ‘Boomerang’ came out as ‘The Bomber’ and ‘Stuck-On’ was called out as ‘Suck-On!’, (which fortunately wasn’t taken up by the pack as a directive to engage in some new kind of erotic after-run entertainment).  GG dropped off the radar altogether and got no dinner, which was not the outcome we were looking for.  Fortunately we were at the Family Club and he was looked after with cash-back and a beer.

Udder Idjit sergeanted for the night, and a few brisk charges were read out. I’ve lost me notes but I do recall the Hawthorn supporters, Rolf Harris, Astro, Gumboot (stand-in supporter) and Nickleby drinking. Astro also drank for a major cock-up in the showcase which has seen the 1989 and 1991 premiership cups get mixed up. Mummies’ Boy drank for topping the tipping and Plunger (Mk II, not the ex-GM) from Halfway Hash was the virgin.

On on Mummies’ Boy
