Run 1621 Report

Date: 6 August 2014

Hare: Racey Tracey

Venue: Savoy Tavern, 677 Bourke St (Cnr Spencer St) Melbourne

Racey Tracey wants us to think. Think Kath and Kim. Think baby police and prisoners. Think bird shit. The Savoy Tavern bomb-site as it was, is owned by a company controlled by Mark Rowsthorn, brother of Peter Rowsthorn the actor who played Brett, the put-upon husband of Kim in “Kath and Kim”. The Savoy Plaza next door was the Police Cadet Training Academy from 1974-87, while prisoners from the Spencer St Remand Centre nearby would race to the Savoy Tavern to quench a desperate thirst upon release. Prior to 1999, the Savoy Tavern was owned by the government of Nauru.

In the 1960s Nauru had the world’s highest per capita income thanks to phosphate mining, used as fertiliser. Seagulls have been pooing on Nauru for millennia thereby creating guano and phosphate. Did you know that in 1973 the Savoy Tavern sold more beer than any other outlet in Victoria?

The run took us through West Melbourne, down to Etihad Stadium, along the Docklands waterfront, across the Yarra, then across the Yarra and back up Spencer St. The interesting new landmarks and bridges down Docklands way went unappreciated by the pack in the cold, non-stop rain. Udder must be soluble because as soon as the rain started, he disappeared. The chalk marks were soluble too, but the Racey the hare followed the pack ensuring that no-one got lost.

Racey Tracey charged as hare and Astro charged as walkers rep. Swamp Rat did the runners report. She thought the run was lovely, scenic, delightful – it took her to lots new places where she met lots of new people and lots of other ‘glass half-full’ stuff. Dr Dr Swamp Rat should stick to teaching history to birds because she must have imbibed several of those half-full glasses when she awarded the run 1975/1973. Linda gave the walk report which was well marked.

Deeper then sang a song, Cut Loose recited her own little poem, and Udder quoted a few verses from Shakespeare. Next week Colours will give a piano recital accompanied by Punch on violin followed by Kokup and 2 Bottoms performing a participative dance improvisation. What happened to the old Lakeside where entertainment was telling non PC jokes and drinking till you vomited?
