Carringbush Hotel, ABBOTSFORD

Prince

FEVER PITCH

Yes, it’s that time of year again when all Melbourne is gripped by footy fever. The run in the heart of Magpie territory (ed. though actually located Abbotsford) was therefore a very appropriate venue. The Carringbush Hotel was bedecked in footy memorabilia and advertising the events for the DAY.

As the pack assembled in the outer forum of the hotel, finals fever was in the air (though interrupted by the noise of the suburban rail network). Lethal was heard to say that he would support any team that plays against Collingwood and others like Whippet couldn’t see what all the fuss was about. Ardent Collingwood supporters dressed in the club colours led by GG were strutting their stuff and managed a photo opportunity prior to the run.

It seems that not everybody is enamoured with this footy code. Deeper and Sooty were in deep conversation about the rugby world cup (the game played in heaven) whilst Janus and myself were musing over last weekend’s premier league results (serious football).

The run was set around the streets of Collingwood (ed. as well as Abbotsford and Fitzroy), around the narrow streets, along the Yarra and with lots of checks named after Magpies players. Pity poor Generic Hasher, who turned up late and thought that the names on the checks represented the streets that were on the trail! As the trail reached it climax at the hallowed ground of Victoria Park. GG and Bovine were quite overcome and I thought they were going to kneel down and pray for victory in front of this imposing vista. The run took us over Hoddle Street and then onto the drinks stop at the Bendigo Hotel (ed. Formerly owned by THE John Wren with a tunnel underneath to THE tote). Once more the hotel was bedecked with footy icons though I did see a Man Utd. Team photo tucked in the corner. On again over Hoddle St and onto another check (very unusual to have checks after the drinks stop). The food was plentiful and served with military type precision.
