Run 1050, 4 August 2004 Hare: Virtually Nickel-B (actually Klingon) Venue: Riversdale Hotel, Hawthorn Cnr Riversdale & Auburn

A fine traditional Lakeside night it was for Run 1050: no GM, no Hare, no trail and hardly any runners – but none the worse for all that! Nickel-B hared the run but was called away at the last moment to clinch some high-level deal on the other side of the continent, so the stout-hearted Klingon stepped into the breech and laid the trail in the driving rain. (Klingon for next year’s GM I say; gotta get in early if we wanna have one!). Needless to say it promptly washed down the drain so Klingon had to go out and not-so-subtly steer the pack round the trail. This ended up like a schoolboy game of Aussie Rules with the entire pack ‘tagging’ Klingon very tightly and you could have thrown a blanket over the whole bloody lot at any given moment.

Back at the venue we settled into the very good special on the steak, for a posh pub in Hawthorn. Gumboot scored the run as a ‘2’; fairly appropriate as Hawthorn had only won that many for the year. Whippet was charged for being a Dennis Hopper lookalike, and Tangles and Rolf Harris also for ‘moral turpitude.’ GG charged Lotsa Fun for not calling him back onto trail at the Victoria Rd Reserve (but the rest of the pack couldn’t understand the problem there!). Punch charged Stuck-On for speaking in Mongolian., and Bovine Breeder charged U.S. visitor Snappy Twat just so he could get to call out her name – as many times as possible. Rigby got Punch for 50 runs; Sooty was on 69 – as he often is. Mothball went for his outrageous mullet which is even longer than it was at this time last year, and Tiger Moth went for cracking the ton in the tipping.

Now, as I said, not much at all was happening on the run, but it did turn out to be a bit of a sentimental homecoming for a few of us. First of all, trail nearly went past Tangles’ family brickworks, fired up originally by great-grandpa Fritz Holzer (that’s from the German side of the family; the Tangles side of it is of course from the Emerald Isle). Tangles is still waiting for the inheritance to come through – with bated breath. I’ve never personally had to wait for anything with bated breath, but I’m tipping that it’d be fairly rancid.

We also ran straight past Murphy’s Grain Store which used to be just next to Balloch’s Bakery. Now the Dad of Mummies’ Boy spent most of the post-war career at Balloch’s, and was personally at the heart of the great 1967-Sunday-baking scandal. In those days the hot bread kitchens were just getting going but the big bakeries were prohibited from baking of a Sunday. So one day, the boss called the old man in and said, “Now look here, Charlie, there’s nothing for it but to bake our way out of it on a Sunday; illegal or no. They’ll come and arrest us, but don’t worry’ I’ll be right behind ya when you appear in the Magistrate’s Court.” And so it was that the old man was the first and only man ever convicted for baking bread on a Sunday in the greater Melbourne metropolitan area (but to give Jack Balloch his due; he did stump up with the £ 2/6- for the fine).

Not to be outdone, then Rolf pipes up and reckons that her great-great-great-great grandpappy was done for baking underweight bread, way back in the 1820s. Not in Hawthorn though, but in the harbour city. The honoured ancestor was actually frog-eese, going by the nom de plume of François Girard (if you don’t mind), who had the enormously bad luck to have knocked off a couple of gold watches while traveling in the Old Dart, thereby necessitating transportation Downunder (rather than having done the evil deed in his native France, when he probably would have got off with going to the guillotine).

And so it is, and so it was, chums; another average night, but made fantastically bloody interesting due to the heroic bloody deeds of all of our Hash-forbears of yore.
