Run 1084, 14 March 2005 Hares: GG & Lunna Venue: Palmerston Hotel, South Melbourne. Lakeside 21st anniversary run, joint run with Melbourne HHH

The run began just as a slight weather change arrived and the Pack set off into a relatively cool breeze. The combined Pack was about 30 strong a little down on expectations, but no doubt the long weekend had an effect. However, never mind the quantity, the quality was good and we had good synergy between the noisy Melbourne crowd and the genteel Lakeside participants.

Trail took us round the block, over Albert Rd and into the Golf Course before turning towards Lakeside Drive – and the Grand Prix Track. We crossed the track and were halted for a group photo to commemorate the actual birthday of LakeSide Hash – at this location and to the day 21 years ago. Ceremonial duties over, trail turned and funnelled us down between the concrete barriers and steel fences of the bitumen race track still in position but broken open at strategic points. We emerged back out of the chute and ran towards the rear of the old and dilapidated cricket stand next to Red Heads, a stark contrast to the modern world of Grand Prix racing and the VIPs who attend.

We could hear and see a little of the noisy crowd in the adjacent Bob Jane Soccer (World Game) stadium as they cheered on their respective teams and hoped for a chance to riot. Trail then turned towards the swimming centre, now under reconstruction and expansion for the 2006 Commonwealth Games, now  not so far away. Not much happening at this stage amongst the runners some of whom (the Men), were taking in the sights and feel of the almost ghostly structures of the now discarded race track.  Others, (the Women) just ambled along chatting quite oblivious to the environs.  [*Ed. Note: I don’t think the author’s use of “Men” and “Women” has any necessary relation to the actual gender of those referred to].

Trail then took us back to the surrounds of the lake, where lots of family groups were picnicking, more in the Moomba  Spirit of the day, than the week old G.P. and enjoying the day light saving  before it vanishes come Easter. Ah well, back into the circuit proper between the empty stands, where there were no cheers for us as we ran up the straight. It really was Ghost City as we passed all the half torn down structures and scarred grass patches in the parklands. We were now right at the back of the circuit – the secret part where no spectators normally get and were led under the railway line and onto Canterbury Rd, where the sodium street lights were now starting to bite.

The pack was really strung out now with little groups of two or three runners, eg BOKKY and SYDWAYS, PUNCH and PREGNANT PAUSE all heading North and towards Home. It was a reasonably long way in and we could smell cooking aromas as we followed the gravel track alongside the railway, past some very modern looking toilets in a show room lurking amongst the bushes in the middle of no where. Trail turned under the bridge at Albert Park Rd for the On Home and released us to our own devices as we ran past lots of those little but expensive South Melbourne cottages till we found the pub.

We were soon getting stuck into the Pasta and wanting the Circle, but the GM had lost his notes and we ended up banging the tables with our spoons to encourage him to start. Finally, Welcome to All was called. Drinks were awarded to many people, more for who they were than what they had done, Visitor CHUCKIE, not as well endowed as the voluptuous Harriette of some years ago, PUNCH, MUMMIES BOY & LETHAL  were all called forward. The RA gave the run description, gave GG and LUNNA a score of 6.5 and nominated it as a Prague run –  Lots of Checks!  GG was not too happy with his score of six (he gave the 0.5 to LUNNA), claiming the first runner, (NON STOP, now back to fitness and smiling again), was back in exactly 55 mins just as GG predicted.  LETHAL piped up and said it deserved Two, Two, Too – Two Hares, Two Packs, Too Long!   At this stage the two Collingwood Hares appeared to be “not speaking”.

Charges included TWO BOB, trying to raffle the pub’s memorabilia, the RA for his agricultural haircut which looked like a Jim’s Mowing job, PREGNANT PAUSE for multiple charges and COP GUM for escaping the Big City and taking Law and Order to Warrnambool.  It was now a big Circle and PHANTOM was amazed when 635 was able to call it  correctly, not realising that the Scribe takes notes and was able to secretly read from them as he gave the Big A. BARTERBITCH congratulated GG for collecting the most money on the Red Dress run, but asked him to hand it back for the Salvos as intended. The GM copped one for wearing his St Patrick’s day New Shoes and BOK CHOY got one for shooting off to PNG for a Mason’s Meeting when he should have been delivering Curry to the weekend camp site. Uncle TWO BOB showed his tender side when he confirmed that he can and does  fiddle the raffles, by ensuring that little ALICE (Add-On) won the first prize (a big bag of Chips) and wasn’t she happy?

BARTERBITCH told a couple of good Hash Jokes (involving Sheep, GG & Colac) and we finished with the LakeSide Anthem. Then it was RIP and down to the corner bar for a few more.

ON, ON 635.
