Run Report for Run No. 930

“In the dark of a cold night, with those icy chills of winter nipping in off the bay, the hash poured forth from BB’s abode onto Ruskin Street, just as the rain also decided to pour down on the wildly dressed hashers. Some were wearing red kagools, courtesy of the Interhash in Tassie, some wearing windcheaters or storm jackets, and others, plonkers like me, were wearing only the obligatory hash T shirt. I believe it is time some of us realised that winter has truly arrived.

Leaving Ruskin Street behind (and why not, he never really was much of a poet), we crossed the storm drain channel, which looked quite atmospheric in the rain lashed night, and then crossed it again as the rain continued to pour down. It was not looking too atmospheric The second and wetter time around. We all hung around a check next to the channel, waiting for someone to do the dirty work. And why not? Some of those buggers were suitably equipped for this foul night.

The check was broken and we followed along the Esplanade down to the junction with Huntingdale Road, (close to where Germaine Greer was born, went to school, made her first communion, and grew up to begin her tirade against the male population of the universe). If only she had been able to see such a magnificent of body of men, in the form of Lakeside male hashers blazing down the avenues of Elwood, then she would have appreciated the sensitive and caring nature of the male species, coupled with a mouth watering physique, and never have embarked on her fruitless campaign against such a peerless group of people.

Across to Elwood beach, where we had the first of our four(!) drink stops, this one a welcoming cup of port. Did anyone else drink too much port? It appears I did as, even though it was early in the run, I had a decided wobble when I descended down from the drink stop to run along the footpath that skirts the bay. The Council has made a sterling effort over these last couple of years to beautify this area, and have a native revegetation programme along the foreshore. Signs advertise this revegetation programme, and ask that you do not walk on the landscaped areas, to give them a chance to flourish. I’m sure most of the hashers must have seen these signs as there was one right next to where we all trampled across the planted beds of some native species. I hope it was not a rare species, because it certainly will be now.

So, on across to the gardens close to Luna Park, where we had the seond drink stop of red wine. Yes, yours truly seems to have had too much again as lagging even further behind the hash as they sprinted (and, for some, shuffled) away, towards the bright lights of Luna Park, then back down along the Esplanade, passing the Stoke House, the one time tea warehouse and now a trendy restaurant. Not the sort of places hashes tend to frequent. And another drink stop. This time rose. Does anyone still drink rose? Apparently so, as the hash were all scrunched beneath a few wind tossed branches, trying to gain some shelter from the continuing rain, sipping away. Quite a few of us ended up standing out drinking in the cold and rain as a hash dog, a labrador with a most mournful expression had bagged the best spot in the shelter of the trees. I can’t stand rose, so I am perplexed as to why I drank so much of the stuff.

Up into Acland Street, then down through pelting rain past Robe Street ( once home to Joy Hester and Albert Tucker, but there was no joy in running past there this particular night) passing all the hip and trendy as they dined in the strip of cafes and restaurants, wondering who that wet and bedraggled group were running in the rain driven street outside, apparently enjoying themselves. And we were, as it was a great run.

The final drink stop was reached beside the St. Kilda botanical gardens, where white wine was offered. I don’t normally drink white wine, but I appear to have made an exception in this instance. No wonder my head felt the next morning like a sumo wrestler had sat on it .

A short run back to the On On, where a large and welcome fire was blazing in the yard. An excellent (hic) run.”

The rest of the night is something of a blur (I wonder why), so I hope someone else can provide you with details. While I remember, in my excitement at being on the hash, I had forgotten to pay these last two weeks. I promise to make good my omission when I next run.

On On,

Plugger
