Run 1007 Report

Lakeside Hash House Harriers Run 1007

15/10/03 Hare: SBD Swan Hotel, Windsor

It was with a grand sense of tradition that SBD set a run from the Swan Hotel in Windsor exactly one year to the week that Quasimodo set her run from the same location. Like Quasi’s run, the trail was wet, dark, and confusing and Shunt was nowhere to be seen.

Having set the trail twice already, and losing it both times to downpours of biblical proportions, SBD set off to semi-live hare it the third time around. To ensure he wasn’t caught and dacked he made sure that the trail was hard to see (yellow chalk!) and checks were long and obscure. Suitably enough for a 007 run, what should have been as obvious as a secret agent who always uses his own name, always drinks the same peculiar cocktail, and draws attention to himself with fancy gadgets and explosions, was instead mysterious and difficult to discern.

Mission accomplished, the pack lingered and scratched heads, losing the occasional hasher who thought they could outsmart the hare and ended up completely lost. Thus it was that Point Post and I found ourselves wandering in circles, only re-discovering trail at the Chinese Church check. We should have chugged off cheerily through the cricket pitch, but instead, chagrined and chary at chasing chancy choices so far, we cheerily chivvied in the direction of the on-in instead.

The Swan’s menu prices had taken an upward turn since last we visited, but the portions were in proportion (especially for those lucky enough to have picked the steak or halibut). And there were no strung-out Joey Ramone lookalikes passed out in the bistro either. Instead we chased off the table of respectable elders and got on with the business of the circle.

Charges followed and I can’t for the life of me remember them. We somehow made it through three jugs of beer and the Religious Advisor, having been lax in his duties so far, was called upon to christen Mark “Mike” Moran, against his better judgement, “The Arse-assin”. Much debate followed, especially amongst those who retired to the on-on-on at the Belgian Beer Café.
