Run 1113, 28 Sept 2005 Hare: Lethal Venue: Lords Reserve Munro Ave Carnegie

We gathered on a balmy night, with rain forecast, but this did not deter the dedicated. They were only worried about whether the beer would turn up. Did they have no faith in the ever reliable Grogmaster?

The Hare was still out re-setting bits of trail so the pack set off. There was a big loop round the park, which happily allowed the latecomers to catch up. Then off through all the cobbled back lanes of Carnegie, past the Glenhuntly shops and then up somewhere else before a good long on-home. Lethal provided a 2 course banquet of bread and soup followed by pasta and sauce.

It was the first run since the Grand Final victory of the red and white team from the Lakeside Oval. Those aquainted with that might have noticed several popular renditions of a corrupted version of the Lakeside song. As it turned out for us, it was a very Lakeside kind of night. Let me explain.

We started out on the run BY DAY, and finished BY NIGHT. When we ALL got back to the ON-AFTER, the BEER had turned up an we certainly did CHERISH THE SIGHT of it. There was bit of DRINKING, TALKING. During the run of course, there was a fair bit of RUNNING, WALKING, some of it ON TO THE CHECK, and even TO THE CHECK BACK, not to mention the occasional need to JUST KEEP RUNNING DOWN THE TRACK. But what made it a real Lakeside kind of night was the STORM. As we know, Lakeside keeps running THOUGH THE STORMS BE GREAT OR SMALL. On this occassion, when it happened, GREAT was how the STORM was.

BarkOn, aka Chiko had the time of his life cutting great arcs through the park chasing the lightening and barking at the thunder. Luckily the storm broke while we were all under shelter just about to start the circle. What actually happened in the circle is anybody’s guess. This was because the rain was so heavy on the tin roof of the shelter, it made such a noise no-one could hear a thing. Not even shouting to the person next to you. So hear is what happened, as far as I know.

Bovine told us about the run and it maybe scored 11/13. Stephie and Schitzo were charged as returnee and visitor from MHHH JustDoIt and Rebore were charged for achieving 10 runs. Then control was passed from the GM to the out-of-earshot stand-in Sergeant, Mummies Boy. There were a few more charges at that end of the circle, but from where I was I could not hear what they were for.

Anyway just as the circle finished the rain eased up and we got in a good rendition of the Lakeside song. Just before that I started to tell people how my great grandfather played cricket for South Melbourne and was on the committee for the year 1888-89. My grandmother always tried to get me to barrack for South, but it didn’t work. My theory is that you have to have a good song. If Essendon only had a good song, they would have probably won 32 premierships, not 16. BTW, who was the last Victorian team to win a premiership?
