Run 1207, 16 May 2007 Hare: It wasn’t Me Venue: Prince Albert Hotel, Grattan St, Carlton

Running the boundary line at Jacob’s under-13 footy game on Sunday had left the Achilles’ tendons stretched so I was looking for an early out from It Wasn’t Me’s virgin sub-marathon. An inner loop through the university left Mothball and I off the pace. We lost the pack in the underground car park which may look like a cement bunker but which is apparently an architectural wonder and its tree-like pillars that recede in every direction are rivalled only by the forest of columns in the Great Mosque at Cordoba.  Feeling the pinch, I guided Mothy through the maze of alleyways in Melbourne Uni until we accidentally hit trail and ran into the rest of the pack. Now I put my cunning plan into operation, ditched Mothball, slipped into Readings for a bit of quiet browsing, then strolled home down Lygon Street – only to find that Mothball had done the same thing at exactly the same time and got back to the On well before me, together with GG, Snowbitch and the rest of the walkers. The rest of the pack gamely embarked on the outer loop which swept counter-clockwise through Royal Park, Flemington, Deer Park, Werribee and Southbank, or so it apparently seemed. Miss Belinda had run 27 k without raising a sweat but had nothing left to give so retired before dinner. This was held in our splendid private venue which occupied the entire second floor of the Prince Alfred. Just the spot for your 21st, or in our case, your 50th birthday or retirement function.

Mothy stood in for Cheesecake who was home with the plague and Highly Infectious (something possibly wrong here), and we proceeded to get through a batch of moderately amusing charges. New runner Adam rated the run ‘pretty good’ (though he hasn’t got anything to compare it with yet). Two bottoms was the returnee. Adam was also charged by Klingon for knowing all the chargees names on his first run. Adam found his way here via a chance meeting in the Cathedral Ranges with E&B, and Cooch in formal gear, who were up there celebrating Quasimodo’s 30th birthday. Nickelby charged Klingon for disappearing in the middle section of the run. Having disappeared after the first 20% of it I thought that was quite a creditable performance. Mothy charged Flem for instigating the La Trobe uni stabbing and Bluebang accused Klingon and Prince for not showing sufficient leadership …hmm…something will have to be done about that. All in all, a very creditable first-up effort by It Wasn’t Me.
