Run 1395, 15 Sep 2010 Hare: Tripod Venue: Piazza Navona, 23-25 Toorak Rd, South Yarra

Picture this. We roll up to this amazing purpose built venue. We do a memorable run around South Yarra, Richmond and Cremorne. We return to the restaurant. The service is lovely, the food is fantastic and the ambiance is nothing but a wonderful experience. WAKE UP! WAKE UP! WAKE UP! WAKE UP! WAKE UP! WAKE UP! WAKE UP! The run was excellent, if not long and torturous. But the venue. What does one say about Piazza Navona? Good, bad, indifferent, or terrible?

Normally we turn up to the venue, order our food. (Some hashers might organise a pre-lube prior to the run with the universal hash lubricant – beer.) We then normally do the run, get back, get our food very soon, and then do the circle and wander home. This night, the restaurant decided in an about face that we could not order in the dining room no doubt due to our appearance. Instead, we were banished to the back room and told that we would order our food after we got back from the run. Thinking that Tripod has organised something clever, I went outside a little puzzled but safe in the knowledge that Tripod would look after us.

Unbeknownst to us, Tripod was ambushed by the restaurants owner, this short fat greasy generation me-me-me, upstart kid, who decided that he would renege on what he had agreed upon. It’s a pity as Bing Bang and I had watched some restaurant renovation rescue show last year and the matriarch of the restaurant had said that although she had retired, she was still working in the restaurant and that she was doing this as she just wanted the best for her kids. She was just being a good mother to her children. During the final credits it was announced that she had sadly passed away only few weeks after the recording. Now its owned by Mr Me Me Me.

The run really was excellent. Proof of how good it was shown when Cooch, a resident of Richmond himself, admitted that we ran down some alleyways and back streets that he had never been to.

Back to the venue of the vertically challenged grosse fatty schiesser. Codpiece was vocally letting the waitress know her displeasure, then Mothball caught a cockroach running on the table and killed it with deft application of the plastic water jug. Mothball was very upset and demanded the waitress to get that oil laden owner to answer for this. The owner arrived and he and Mothball yelled at each other. Then GG arced up and started yelling at the owner and the owner yelled back and it was on. The owner decided that we could all leave if we wanted to and opened the door. It was a shout-fest and every HR manager should have recorded this as an example of conflict and the lack of conflict management.

The food was inconsistent. Big Bang ordered the giant ravioli with crab meat. That was very good. I ordered the spaghetti marinara with a tomato base. I think the owner had stood over my plate for a few minutes as I had a pool of oil collect on my pasta with its dry mussels. The spaghetti marinara was truly a hash. GG’s pasta was good so the food was fair to muddling. The service from the waitress was good, very good if you consider that she was left to look after a room full of people that were collectively not happy and some were obviously on a mission. The attitude of the greaseball was atrocious and the venue is therefore definitely not friendly to the hash. Strange, most venues that I know like it when they get an extra thousand dollars for what is normally a quiet night.

Charges – We had a circle after ordering our food and waiting for it to arrive. Tripod got charged as well as most everyone. Deep Throat returned and brought her son Marcus along.

All in all it was probably not the greatest hash in Lakeside’s history but it will certainly go down in the annals of history. The few of us that decided to come will always be able to speak from personal experience about that night at that shiggy little restaurant… The ones that did not attend will only be able to look on with amazement.
